Hankel Middle School English Poetry Contest
Some poems are not simply recited — they are brought to life.
On the stage of the Grade 7 English Poetry Performance Competition at Hankel Middle School, students transformed English poetry from words on a page into voices, emotions, and vivid scenes.
Some students began with confidence and steady rhythm, as if every emotion had already been carefully placed into each line.
Others were still nervous, pausing to breathe and start again, but not a single student chose to give up.
As the poems unfolded, the atmosphere on stage began to change.
Some students used changes in tone to carry emotion, while others slowed down at key moments, allowing each line to linger a little longer and the imagery to become clearer.
The most memorable moments were when students did more than simply “read” — they performed.
Through gestures, expressions, and rhythm, the poems became more than words; they became something the audience could truly feel.
It was a chance to see how students are gradually turning language into a way to express themselves.
At the end, the principal said, “Every student has improved.”
And those moments of growth were found in every student willing to step onto the stage and turn poetry into a story.
